Shoulder Pads making a Comeback???

They’re Baaaaack. Designers such as Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Zac Posen and Diane von Furstenberg were just some of the designers at New York Fashion Week that were embracing the bold shoulder pads. Could it be that the 80’s linebacker look is making a comeback? Linda Wells, editor in chief of Allure Magazine told USA Today that “ They make the waist and hips look smaller, and they give a defined look, vs. the slouchy, relaxed throw-a-cardigan-over-everything style of dressing.”

I was actually cleaning out my closet a couple of months ago and came across an old blazer that had shoulder pads!! I kept the blazer, but just cut off the shoulder pads. I’m not too sure if I’ll be sewing them back anytime soon. What do you think of shoulder pads making a comeback…would you wear it?

Here are some other key looks from New York Fashion Week (Courtesy Associated Press)

The urban warrior: Corset-style bodices; camouflage prints; hard accessories; towering shoes and boots.
Stormtrooper: Stiff, techno fabrics; metallics; shoulder flange and peplums standing away from the body.
Rock 'n' roller: Leather — mixed with a little lace; black mixed with highlighter colors; miniskirts; tough metal hardware.
Power player: Skirt suits with a long, lean silhouette; shoulder pads; fur-trimmed coat.

Project Runway Tapes Finale

Project Runway taped its 6th season finale today. You're probably use to seeing the finalists send their collection down the runway, but not this time. According to the Associated Press "because of the legal battle the cast has not been announced and the finalists had to stay hidden backstage." As you might know, season 6 of PR has been delayed because of an ongoing battle between NBC Universal (owns Bravo)the Weinstein Co.; and the Lifetime Channel.

Heidi Klum told the audience "This year is gonna be a little bit different for us, for all of you, for our designers backstage. ... We're all in a bit of a limbo and we hope that everything gets sorted out very soon." We hope so too!

Funky Fashion

So this past weekend I was at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival and I had to share these pictures I took. It’s an artistic take on the 1960’s shirt dress. They are made from the most random things like shingles, old letters from gas stations, wood, poker chips and even bottle caps. They are from artist John Petrey, who has been doing this for over 20 years. Anywho, I thought it was pretty cool and thought I’d share.

Red Carpet Look for Less

Ever wanted to look like your favorite celeb on the red carpet? Well I recently came upon a desinger that creates gorgeous gowns inspired by dresses worn on the red carpet for less--much less! FAVIANA has recreated gowns worn by celebs such as Eva Longoria, Misha Barton, Kate Winslet, Marcia Cross and Katherine Heigl. Kim Kardashian was actually wearing one of their dresses when she met Prince Albert of Monaco.

Since we love the celebrity look for less we caught up Shala Moradi,Chief Designer for FAVIANA. Here's what she had to say:

Q: Tell me more about the legendary red carpet inspired gowns.

A: Faviana pays very close attention to all red carpet events because our customers enjoy dressing like their favorite stars. During any awards show, the best celebrity looks are studied and sketched. Fabrics are chosen from our vast stock fabric collections or purchased from local suppliers. Then, dresses are draped and pinned, patterns are made, and the dresses are cut and sewn in house...all in one day! All bead work and ornamentation is done in house for the initial sample.

Q: Which celebrity fashion do you admire most?

A: Eva Longoria is one of Faviana's favorite celebrities because she always looks beautiful, well-groomed, polished and perfect. Another favorite celebrity is Kate Winslet.

Q: How did FAVIANA get its start?

A: Faviana has been creating special occasion dresses for more than 20 years. We started out designing daytime dresses. Then, in the late 80s, during the heyday of “Dynasty,” we we made one evening dress with puffy sleeves that was a huge success.

Q: What is your favorite piece?

A: Right now our favorite is a beautiful beaded print chiffon gown (Style 6321).

In case you missed it...After 15 years of having New York Fashion Week held at Bryant Park organizers of the event announced that they will move the event to Lincoln Center beginning 2010. They had been receiving complaints from the park management for a while that it was getting in the way of the skating rink during the winter and regular use of the park in the summer. It's also grown in size, so it's new local will help in accomodating all of the designers.
