Ask VF: Never been a fashionista, but now I want a stylish look that's age appropriate

Hi lovelies. I'm not sure I told you, but I recently became part of a really amazing project called "Mentoring Hermanas" (which means sisters in English). It's part of New Latina, a bicultural online magazine and it's basically a Q & A platform where women can ask questions and they are answered by a group of professional Latina women.  I'll be answering all fashion & beauty questions (but they also have other topics like finance, health, nutrition..etc.) Here's the first question that came in for me....

Q:  I have never really been into fashion or what’s in style. But, as I get older, I do find myself wanting to dress more stylish and youthful. I am size 12, sometimes 14, and I’m in my late 30′s. I also have a small waist but bigger on my thighs and behind. What types of clothing items should I start with to have a closet that inspires me to dress nicely and feel good about what I’m wearing. Also, what stores would you recommend for someone of my age and body. I would like a wardrobe that I can use daily, but can upgrade for work, if needed.

A:  Hi there,
Thanks for sending in your question. One of the first steps in revamping your wardrobe and picking clothes that inspire you, is knowing your body type, and it seems to me like you have a good idea of that. Now it’s all about finding pieces that will flatter and accentuate your body and shape.
Here are some tips when choosing clothes for your body type:
  • Look for tops that have visual interest, such as a fun print/pattern or bold color and pair it with a neutral colored bottom (such as black, navy, brown or a dark denim).  What this does is, it draws attention away from your lower half and directs the eye upward.
  • Skirts and dresses are also a must for every wardrobe. I find that whenever I’m running late for work I can easily throw on a dress and I’m out the door in no time. For your body type I would recommend picking a skirt or dress with an A-Line cut in a structured fabric.  (An A-line cut is one that is fitted at the hips and gradually widens towards the hem, giving the impression of the shape of a capital letter A).....
