Why you're never too young to start a financial plan

My late husband was the financial planner in our marriage. He was in charge of everything from handling the bills, to setting up our son’s college fund, to handling our retirement. I was very blessed with such an amazing man. To be honest, I never really realized the importance of financial planning until he passed away two years ago from cancer at the age of 34. I was left a widow at the age of 31 with a two-year old. Something I would have never imagined when we got married 8 years prior. But that’s why financial planning is SO important. I can’t stress this enough. It helps you be prepared for the future and in many cases, the unimaginable--whether it is an illness, a death, an accident or the loss of a job.

I wanted to share with you a few tips to help you get started with your financial planning and what has helped me as a solo-mom.

Invest in life insurance: Life is unpredictable. Period. I still remember sitting in the hospital room with Fernando when the doctors told him he had six to nine months to live. It was devastating. He went from being this strong guy who never got sick to having Stage 4 stomach cancer. As I mentioned earlier, I never thought in a million years I would become a young widow raising a child by myself. I was fortunate however that I had a husband that thought about everything and despite our tragedy, he was secure in the knowledge that me and our son would be okay.

My story is a reminder that once you have a family—it doesn’t matter how old you are—life insurance is absolutely essential. If you don’t know where to start, State Farm Life Insurance has an array of life insurance products that can improve your financial wellbeing. You can find an agent to help you choose the right kind of policy to meet you and your family’s needs. It really gives you a peace of mind to know that your family will be taken care of if something were to happen to you. The good part to starting early is that you can find really affordable rates. So please take my advice on this one, I really encourage you to look into life insurance.

Set-up a Budget: When my late husband passed away, I was left in the dark with things like setting up a budget since he was in charge of this. I was really kicking myself and thinking man, if only I had paid a little more attention. Luckily, it’s never too late to start. Setting up a budget is very important in your overall financial planning.

The first step is to know how much you are spending on a monthly basis. There are several free budget templates you can pull up online. This will include things like how much you spend on utilities, groceries, entertainment, gas, meals…etc. At the end of the month, compare how much you spend with how much you are making. Obviously, you never want to spend more than you make. It’s important you are living within your means. If you’re not, try to prioritize and see what things you can cut. Perhaps it’s the Starbucks coffee every morning or maybe eating out only on the weekends.

Set-up a retirement fund or at least try to save regularly: Retirement might sound decades away, especially when you’re young, but trust me—it’s not. Life goes by so quickly. Before doing Viva Fashion full-time, I opened up a retirement fund when I started my first corporate job out of college (I was 23 years old). The sooner you start saving, the more time your money has to grow. For example, if you invest $5,000 a year for 10 years, starting when you’re 25 that could be more than $1.5 million by the time you retire.

Create a will: I’m actually in the process of this one, but it’s important to also have a will in place. Who will take care of your children should something happen? What will happen to your house (if you own one)? If you don’t have a will, the state will oversee how things are distributed and this can cause tension amongst your loved ones. Bottom line is that making a will is also very necessary and a fairly simple process.

Alright guys, I really hope this post helps you get started with your financial planning or at the very least that it brings up some topics you might not have thought about before.
