5 Tips for Saving on Last-Minute Holiday Travel

Holiday travel season is in full swing and whether you’re jetting off for Christmas or New Year’s Eve, this time of year, travel can be pretty chaotic and not to mention expensive. But not to fret, here are five tips to help you save on any last minute holiday travel:

1) When to Book Flights. All days are not created equal. What day you buy is just as important as to what day you fly. Experts recommend purchasing tickets Tuesday afternoon since many airlines post sales on Monday evening. You’ll also save tons if you fly on Monday or Tuesday as well as flying on Christmas Day.

2) Where to Book a hotel? Instead of splurging on an expensive boutique hotel, hotels like Hampton by Hilton are perfect for value-conscious travelers without sacrificing quality. They have great amenities like free wi-fi, an on-site Suite Shop and they make all of their guests feel welcomed and relaxed. You know what’s also great about these properties? The bed. They are so clean and fresh and are decked out with snuggly pillows and blankets. You really can’t go wrong. If you're traveling with a family, many of them also have kitchenettes which are really convenient.

3) Stray from the Norm. Many people are leaving the big cities during the holiday season, so you’re likely to get a better deal on these places, think New York and Chicago. I don’t know about you, but New Year’s Eve in Times Square has always been on my bucket list.

4) Consider Alternate Airports. Every city has an alternate airport, for example for Miami I always turn to Ft. Lauderdale airport. Besides many times being cheaper than flying out of MIA, it’s also not as busy, which is always a plus. Before buying your airline tickets, be sure to check out all your airport options. Don’t forget to weigh in the cost of transportation and time to make sure it makes the most sense.

5)  Find a Hotel that has Breakfast Included. Spending money on breakfast each day can really add up, especially when you’re traveling with a family. A few months back, I had the opportunity to become an “Ultimate Seekender” for Hampton by Hilton when I visited Myrtle Beach with my family and I really loved their free hot breakfast. It had everything from fresh-baked waffles, hearty oatmeal and even fresh fruits. I gotta say, this is really a perk when you’re looking to save.
