Healthy Breakfast: Açaí Bowl

January 12, 2016

We're excited to kick off the New Year with some healthy recipes from this week's contributor Natty from The Latina CookThe Latina Cook is a London based blog full of delicious healthy recipes with a South-American Twist. Natalie is half-Brazilian and started writing because she realized few people knew how healthy Latin food could be.

First up, is this delicious açaí bowl. Here's how to make it.

Açaí Bowl
By Natty of The Latina Cook

Açaí is a berry that grows in the Brazilian Amazon. The antioxidant-rich dark purple berries are packed with amino acids, as well as vitamins A, B, C and E and minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper and zinc. It is one of the world most celebrated SUPERFOODS. The berries go bad quickly after being picked, so they are often made into juice, supplements or powder, which can be whizzed into smoothies. It curbs appetite and gives an energy boost making it a great drink to have before a workout.

The Açaí bowl (pronounced Ah-sye-yee) is a health food stereotype, but I have to write about it because it is authentically Brazilian (I couldn’t really have my Latin food blog, The Latina Cook, without it) and it's DELICIOUS, not to mention incredibly good for you. I had my first one near a cafe on the beach in Natal, Brazil when I was little and have loved Açaí ever since. Sadly I had to wait every summer before I could indulge again…that is until Açaí-mania hit the world faster than you could say ‘Whole Foods’ and now it's incredibly easy to find Açaí powder or pulp in any health store. It is served very cold in Brazil, like a smooth ice cream or fro-yo and they SMOTHER in it fruits. I always find it strange to see it served with Granola… I prefer eating it with an assortment of tropical fruit to make every bit as exciting as the last. Raspberries and blueberries are naturally low in sugar so those make great toppings!

Enjoy!

1/2 cup frozen red berry mix
