Beauty: How to Make Your Own Natural Deodorant

I never realized how easy it was to make your own deodorant, that is until I tried making my own for the very first time a few months ago. It all started when the one I use on a regular basis ran out. They only sell it online (it's called Truly's) which meant I would have to go a few days without deodorant--until it came in---eekk. To be honest, all the other organic brands I've tried really didn't work for me.

So I decided to look at the back of the ingredients and realized it only had 3 INGREDIENTS! I mean, how hard could it be to try to make my own at home (instead of buying it online). I googled a few natural deodorant recipes to try to find the right mix and finally came up with this one.

You might be wondering why on earth would I want to make my own deodorant? I've said this over and over again on the blog, but your skin is your largest organ. What you put on your skin gets absorbed into your system.  Many deodorants now in days have ingredients such as parabens, aluminum, propylene glycol and many others that can alter your hormones and disrupt your immune system.  Parabens can also mimic estrogen in the body and have been found in breast cancer tumors (here's more info on that).

I'm also all about the 90/10 rule, 90% percent of the time I try to be very healthy (only use organic beauty products and only eat organic food) but 10% of the time I give myself a little wiggle room. There are some days, for example when I might have a big TV segment and I really want to make sure I stay really "dry"and that's when I'll use a "non-organic" deodorant lol.

But other than that, I'm in LOVE with my new homemade deodorant. I just finished making this jar today.

INGREDIENTS

3 T Aluminum Free Baking Soda

3 T Organic Coconut Oil (I use a brand called Radiant Life, but WholeFoods also has several organic coconut oil options).

Optional: 5 Drops Organic Essential Oil (I used Lavender)

Small 4 Oz Mason Jar with Lid

Mix equal parts baking soda with organic coconut oil and then add 5 drops of your favorite essential oil (you can add more drops depending on your liking). I decided to use lavender, but there are so many options like tea tree oil (which is also anti-bacterial). Mix it all together until it is well blended and place in a small mason jar.

I found these mason jars, which were the same ones I use to store my son's homemade baby food. They work great.

Have you ever (or would you ever) try making your own homemade deodorant? Let me know if you make it and how it works for you.

  1. What else I use instead of Lavender. As I heard it's also important to include essential oils that kill bacteria.

    1. Hi Abilene, I also mentioned Tea Tree oil which is anti-bacterial. That would be one of your best bets ;)
