Eddie Borgo Partners with Target on Customizable Collection

By Contributor Liz de la Nuez

I have always been a huge fan of the Target Collaborations for bringing the biggest brand names at affordable prices to us regular shoppers. I am pleased to share that their latest partnership does not disappoint. The retail giant just recently unveiled their next designer, Eddie Borgo which has designed a limited edition collection for Target shoppers that will include a customizable line of jewelry, bags and wall art.

The way it works is that you would choose the main piece such as a necklace or bag and then you can purchase additional charms to give it your personal touch. The jewelry will be completely personal making it fun and unique with his signature motifs such as studs, spikes and pyramids.

His pieces are architecturally modern, but at the same time delicate and flirty. I already have my eye on a fun bucket bag and I know I am going to want an art piece. Items hit stores on July 12th and prices range from $7.99 to $49.99. So mark your calendar ladies.

Video: DIY-How to Make and Outdoor Bench Under $30

This post is brought to you by The Home Depot

With summer right around the corner, I’m always looking for fun DIY projects for my backyard. So I started doing some research online and found the cutest outdoor bench made by only using cinderblocks and wood. I decided to give it a try and I can’t tell you how easy it is to make.

I took a trip to The Home Depot and bought 6 cinderblocks and 2 4x4 pieces of lumber (which I had cut to 67 inches). The workers at The Home Depot are always so helpful and they helped put the cinderblocks and wood in my cart and carry everything to my car!

Here’s a fun little video I did showing you step-by-step how to make it.

This bench is perfect for summer barbecues with friends. And speaking of outdoor barbecues, I also spotted some amazing grills at affordable prices at The Home Depot, like this Thrill of the Grill Brinkmann Grill NLP for just $99 or this Nexgrill SB for $199. You can’t go wrong with either. You can also compliment your DIY bench with other patio furniture, which is at up to 15% off at The Home Depot. Hope you have fun creating your own DIY Bench!

Mommy Monday: 4 Ice Breaker Questions for Making New Mom Friends

I’m always trying to find ways for my toddler to interact with other kids his age and have plenty of play dates, especially since he stays at home with me. But for many new moms like myself, breaking the ice with other moms can be a real challenge. I remember the first time I took my son to the playground; I was a bit shy about approaching other moms. How do you break the ice? What do you say? It can be nerve-wracking. Fortunately, I picked up a few conversation starters that worked every time.

So next time you’re at the park or at a mommy-and-me class, why not try dropping one of these lines? Don’t forget — we’re all in the same parenting boat. The mom next to you is probably just as eager to have mom friendships as you are.

1. Compliment Their Child: I’ve never met a mom that didn’t like to hear about the cuteness of their kid. You can start off by saying something like, “Aw, your son is so cute… he has gorgeous eyes,” or perhaps, “She’s adorable! I love that dress.” Just make sure the compliment is sincere, or else it will come across as fake. This is actually how I made my first mom friend a few months back. I was at a mommy-and-me-class and my friend’s daughter had the most gorgeous blue eyes, and I just couldn’t resist letting her know! The conversation instantly took off from there.

2. Ask About Their Child’s Age: I usually find that if their child is close in age to my son, that helps the conversation along. You can even combine this question with the first one. For example, “Your son is so cute! How old is he?” One time, I met a mom whose son had the same birthday as my son — it was an instant bond.

3. Ask Their Child’s Name: Make small talk by asking their child’s name, and then compliment it, of course —”That’s a beautiful name.” If you are at a playground, you can even ask if they live in the area. Finding commonalities can help build a potential mommy friendship.

4. Make Eye Contact and Smile: A smile is one of the easiest ways to break the ice, without saying a word. It shows that you are friendly and approachable. So don’t be afraid to smile. One time I was at the park with my son, and just having another mom smile back at me gave me the confidence to go up and say “Hi.” We ended up living on the same block, and would schedule “stroller dates” every Wednesday.

Do you have any tips for breaking the ice with new moms?

VF Travels: Cleveland City Guide

If you're thinking there's not much to do in Cleveland, you might want to think again. Our contributing writer, Liz de La Nuez recently had the opportunity to go on a press trip to Cleveland and boy was she in love with this charming city.  Today, she's sharing with us some of the many attractions, shopping and dining options that Cleveland has to offer, along with things to do while visiting this hidden gem.

By Contributor, Liz de La Nuez

Cleveland Rocks!  When I was invited to visit the city of Cleveland through Jet Blue’s inaugural flight, I wasn’t sure what to expect.  I went on my merry way to Cleveland, Ohio and I will be forever grateful, we discovered a hip and modern community that felt fresh and new. The people we met were all humble, friendly and kind. Everyone that we came in contact with only raved about their city and took such pride in their hometown. People told us heartfelt stories about their connections to Cleveland.

Divinas y Humanas Event with John Frieda and Jergens

Me with Daniela from Nany's Klozet (credit: Nany's Klozet)

A few weeks ago I had the very exciting opportunity to attend the Divinas y Humanas event thanks to Jergens and John Frieda. My day started off with some pampering at the Conrad Hotel along with a group of amazing bloggers, including my friend Daniela from Nany's Klozet, Astrid from Latin Blah,  Romina from My Life Mi Vida and El Diario de la Moda.

We had our hair done by John Frieda Celebrity Stylist Sebastian Scolarici (here's a step by step I posted earlier this week on how to get my look). I wanted to go for soft loose waves and one product that I absolutely loved was the John Frieda Frizz Ease Serum. It was kind of rainy and humid that day, so it helped keep all my frizzy hair at bay (always a must with Miami weather).

Behind the Scenes: Univision's Despierta America

Hey guys! Earlier this week I was back on Univision's Despierta America sharing some of my favorite Mother's Day gift ideas from Target. And speaking of Target, I actually wore this dress I scored at Target for just $34 bucks. It's from their line called Fashion Union, which I had no idea existed, but it's amazing. They have a lot of fashion-forward pieces that look way more expensive than they really are (and they're perfect for TV).

Tips for Planning a Baby-Free Summer Getaway!

Before my husband and I started talking about having children, we always said we wanted to take one trip a year, just the two of us, even if it was just around the corner for a night. In my opinion, it's so important to take time out as a couple. Last year, we took our first trip alone to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. And although we missed our little guy like crazy, we had such an amazing time enjoying each other's company.

Here are a few tips that helped us prepare for a baby-free getaway:

Getting Hair Ready with John Frieda

Last week, I had the exciting opportunity to attend the Divinas y Humanas event, which honored women in the media and entertainment. The amazing John Frieda celebrity hair stylist, Sebastian Scoralici created a fresh, loose waves look that would be perfect for day or night. Here's how he created my look:

Step 1. I started by using the John Frieda Luxurious Volume Fine to Full Blow-Out Spray at the root of her hair to achieve volume from the base.

Step 2. I then combined the John Frieda Frizz Ease Nourishing Oil Elixir on the ends to assure her hair had a smooth and shiny look and secure frizz control for Miami’s humid weather.

Step 3. Then, I dried the hair in big sections to maintain body volume. With a 1 inch curling iron I created settle waves and applied a few more drops of the elixir.

Step 4. To finish off the look I sprayed John Frieda Frizz Ease KeraFLEX Flexible Hold Hairspray.

Here's a picture of the final look I took with Millie who also did my fab makeup.

The Perfect Cinco de Mayo Recipe: Black Bean Hummus

Hummus is probably one of the easiest recipes to make that looks more complicated than it really is. I made this black bean hummus over the weekend from this recipe I found on WholeFoods and it was absolutely delicious. With Cinco de Mayo right around the corner, this recipe would be the perfect treat for any gathering you might have planned (or whenever, really).

Instead of canned black beans (which have tons of unhealthy sodium) I used organic dry black beans and simply left them soaking over night.  Dry beans can be pretty tricky to cook, many times it requires up to 6 to 8 hours!! So instead of using a pot, I dusted off my crock pot and used that instead. I cooked them on Low for 8 hours or you can also use the High setting and cook for 3-4 hours.

8 Tips for Traveling with a Baby

When my son was just two months old he went on his first flight ever! The flight itself was short, less than 3 hours, but I was super anxious. I guess as a new mom I didn’t know what to expect. There were several other babies on the flight. I remember going down the airplane aisle to grab our seat and looking at the other moms with their babies. It’s like we were motorcyclist giving each other the “wave.”

Overall the flight was not as bad as I thought. In fact, it went far better than I had ever expected–the little guy slept the entire flight. We are thinking about going on another trip this year, now that he’s 2 years old, but I thought I’d share a few tips I learned during our first trip.

Try to Book your Seats in the Back of the Plane: Typically the engine is louder in the back of the plane, which helped my little one sleep like a charm. In case your baby gets fussy the loud noise will also help mask the crying, plus you are closer to the bathroom. The only downfall to this is if you have a connecting flight and need to get out of the plane a lot quicker.

Get to the Airport with Plenty of Time: I probably dreaded going through security more than the actual flight. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to check-in and go through security. Babies come with extra luggage such as strollers, car seats…etc. We probably had a total of 10 bins filled with our personal items going through security (I counted them in shock!) ps. breast milk, formula and baby medicine do not apply to the 3.4 ounce regulation.
